I recently visited the McNay Art Museum for their modern art exhibit. The stunning collection of works and the beautiful grounds made for a relaxing afternoon. It’s always inspiring to see so much creativity in one place.

NOT BABY OR KID FRIENDLYFirst of all I’m a San Antonio native born and raised here. I haven’t been to the mcnay since 2017 and I was pregnant with my first child. When I first arrived to the mcnay today December 23rd 2023 Ipre bought tickets online and even booked a reservation for the dreamland exhibit. I am a single mother with two children and one of my children is an infant. Naturally any mother will know that if you’re going anywhere with an infant you need your diaper bag. The mcnay staff was extremely rude and unacceptable about having a diaper bag. You cannot enter the museum with any type of bag and that included a diaper bag. When I gave the staff pushback about it stating that my diaper bag has everything in there that I NEED for my infant son and I can’t just leave it in a locker or my car, the staff was extremely rude and condescending. Clearly this place is for old snooty art snobs and single mother’s with young children aren’t allowed to enjoy themselves and the art on winter break. I will not be returning and I will be contacting management to let them know how deeply unsatisfactory this experience was or lack of since we weren’t allowed admission into the museum.

I really enjoyed the visit. I loved Womanish, which is temporary-- I think the exhibits change often. I didn't love the exhibits themed around color (not a particularly meaningful way to juxtapose art, in my opinion) but that is a minor quibble. The grounds were beautiful, the signage was excellent, and the curation felt mostly very purposeful and earnest. Definitely worth a visit if you like modern art at all.

My first visit to the McNay Art Museum was a great one! They had an amazing collection, and the building itself was really beautiful. I was impressed by the sculpture collection, the multiple Picasso pieces, and the large Monet waterlily painting. My favorite part was the temporary exhibit Beyond Reality, featuring work by 4 younger, Texas-based, artists. Overall, it was a fantastic visit and I would love to return next time I’m in San Antonio! I would recommend this institution to any art-lovers in the area.

Spending the afternoon at the McNay Art Museum was delightful. There is a huge variety of genres, mediums, and artists amongst the many exhibits and gardens. I was especially moved seeing original art by some of the world's greatest artists: Monet, Van Gogh, Picasso, Chegal, Renoir, Cassatt, and of course Ms. McNay herself. The building is a work of art itself; absolutely beautiful.
