What makes it fun
Mission San Francisco de la Espada is the first mission constructed in Texas, originally founded in 1690 as San Francisco de los Tejas near present-day Weches, Texas. In 1731, the mission was laboriously transferred to the San Antonio River area and renamed Mission San Francisco de la Espada. A friary was built in 1745, and the church itself was completed in 1756. Beautifully maintained over the centuries, this mission is a perfect example of Spanish architecture in the Southwest and every inch is steeped in historical significance. The grounds themselves are also beautiful and will give any visitor the sensation of stepping back in time to an era before Texas was Texas. Visitors to the Mission can also view a working loom in the Contact Station and on Tuesday afternoons they offer live weaving demonstrations.
