    What makes it fun

It is impossible to fully appreciate San Antonio without making the journey to the city's most famous landmark, the Alamo. Maverick Whiskey, the brainchild of native son Kenneth Maverick and named in honor of the Maverick family's illustrious Texas roots and patriarch Sam Maverick, after whom all other Mavericks are named, is located just a few steps away on the original family farm. The fact that all of the spirits are distilled on the premises means that history permeates the entire structure, from the barrels to the vault of this restored ancient bank. Order a whiskey straight up or check out the menu of drinks blended with food...Who's up for some whiskey and watermelon served al fresco?

We visited here why we waited for our hotel room to be ready. I was happy they had Mocktails to choose from. We met the guy who made the beer & the spirits. We also met the owner & had a nice conversation. He suggested an old fashioned to my husband. he said it was best one he had in a while.
This has become our go to place. The owner knows the guy that has a distillery where we live in Hiltonhead. We were talking about their NA spirit they use to make mocktails.
We got to watch some of the Spurs game with Kim. She was awesome all four times we have been there. She makes a good drink and checks on you frequently. We have also had some great conversations. Unfortunately we won't get to see her before we go. We will be back Monday to maybe get a bottle of the good Bourbon.
The servers were very attentive & friendly. They even took suggestions on their Instagram post they were making.
They have happy hour every day 12-6. the good old fashioned was not part of the happy hour. They have cards and a few games to play. They also have a game night during the week.
We were telling our friends about it & they want to go once they get in town Will hopefully be back.

I stopped by Maverick Distilling while I was in the area and, unfortunately, I was only able to make a quick visit. I mainly came in to pick up a bottle and had to leave, so I did not get to do the full tour or spend as much time there as I would have liked.

That said, even in a short visit, the place made a good impression. The atmosphere was nice, and I liked being able to see the distilling equipment through the glass. It gives the place a more authentic feel and makes you want to slow down, look around, and learn more about what they do.

The staff was great. They were friendly, helpful, and took the time to explain the different product options so I could decide what I wanted to buy. I also appreciated that they did not just push me toward the most expensive or “top” product just to make a bigger sale. They actually listened and helped guide me based on what I was looking for, which I really appreciated.

I would have liked to stay longer, try more of what they offer, and possibly do a tour, but I just did not have the time that day. Based on the short experience I had, I would definitely like to come back another time, sample more of their products, and get the full experience.

Overall, it was a good stop with friendly staff, a nice setup, and a product selection that made me want to come back when I have more time.

Carlos is top notch! Full of energy and a fun host. There is also quite a bit of remarkable history that ties this distillery to the early beginnings of San Antonio. This is a must for anyone wanting to get the “rest of the story” of Texas’ independence.

If you find yourself anywhere near downtown San Antonio and you care about real Texas whiskey, you need to step inside Maverick Distilling.

This isn’t some trendy pop up spot chasing hype. This is history, craftsmanship, and grit poured into a glass. Housed in a historic building with deep Texas roots, Maverick feels like stepping into the past while sipping on the future.

The whiskey speaks first. Bold, balanced, unapologetically Texan. You can taste the grain, the barrel, the heat of this state working its magic. There’s depth there. Character. The kind of pour that makes you slow down and respect what’s in your hand.

And let’s talk about that Four Grain Whiskey at 106 proof. Powerful but refined. Rich layers of sweetness, spice, and oak that hold their own without overpowering the palate. It might just be stepping into serious competition for my 2026 Whiskey of the Year. That’s not a small statement.

Brandon, their Head Distiller, is producing something truly craft. You can tell there’s intention behind every batch. This isn’t mass production. This is hands on distilling, thoughtful blending, and respect for the grain and barrel. That kind of leadership shows up in the glass.

What impressed me most is the attention to detail. From grain selection to fermentation to barrel aging, they aren’t cutting corners. They’re building something meaningful. And you can feel it when you’re standing in that distillery.

The cocktails are sharp, the atmosphere is welcoming, and the staff knows their craft. They don’t just pour drinks. They tell stories.

San Antonio has culture. It has history. Maverick Distilling captures both and distills it into something you can raise a glass to.

If you love whiskey, if you love Texas, or if you just appreciate people doing things the right way, put Maverick on your list.

    Take the ride.

Carlos is a great storyteller, sharing the history of Maverick Distilling and the building it occupies! We participated in the tasting and the flights were excellent. The tour guide was very knowledgeable, showing us how they make their whiskey. They were very prepared for our large group of 33!

The best of the downtown distilleries. They also do beer on site. We did a basic taster flight and the beer flight. I suggest you do them one at a time as we ordered both at the same time and the beer ended up getting warm. Beer was ok, nothing amazing but flaw-free which most SA downtown breweries can't claim. The bourbon was the winner with the private and barrel being our favs. The rye was a little on the soapy side vs being spicy which surprised us since we enjoy rye most of the time. Overall I recommend this as a good place to enjoy some house made spirits.

My friends and I had an excellent time on the tour, enjoying the drinks at the bar, and taking in the history in the tasting room. Maverick was definitely a highlight for us on our San Antonio trip. Also big shout out to Serena for being an awesome tour guide!

This is a pretty cool place. They supposedly open at 12:00 PM on Thursday and Friday, but they can't quite make that happen. Plan on arriving about 1:00 PM. Weekends might be better. Their whiskeys are good... about 17 variations were available. They also brew their own beer with only four on tap. The Irish Red was authentic and very good. They are a little short staffed. Some had to wait a bit, but I received prompt and friendly service.

A great selection of standard beers on tap. A couple of very interesting dark beers and sometimes barrel aged options. Really nice folks behind the counter. I would definitely return the next time I am in San Antonio.
